The Tin Whistles

                                        

The Tin Whistles, founded in 1904 is the oldest golfing fraternity in the country. Based in Pinehurst, North Carolina this 300 member organization promotes the tradition and standards of sportsmanship, while enjoying the spirit of good fellowship through golf.

 

The Tin Whistles formed the Tin Whistles Education and Research Foundation through which they grant four 4 year college scholarships annually to qualified and needy Moore County High School students. Since 1977 some 84students have received over $765,000 in scholarships. Approximately 90% of the funding is raised through Tin Whistles member donations.

 

Many Tin Whistle members over the last 106 years have been prominent in business, finance, government and the military. The list includes local legends Leonard and Richard Tufts, father and son and owners of Pinehurst from 1902 to 1971; world renowned golf course architect Donald Ross; the “grand old man of football” and 30 years a member Amos Alonzo Stagg; noted publishers Alexander Grosset and George Dunlap who brought us The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and the Bobbsey Twins book series; journalist and prolific poet Edgar Guest; the “Architect of Victory” in World War 11, General George Marshall; and the 38th President of the United States Gerald R. Ford.

 

Tin Whistle members won the United States Amateur Championship a total of 15 times: W.C. Fownes, Jr.; 5 time champion Bobby Jones; George Dunlop; Richard Chapman; Arnold Palmer; 2 time champions Harvie Ward, Jack Nicklaus and Jay Sigel.

 

Tin Whistle members won the United States Open Championship a total of ten times and include the likes of Alex Ross, an original Tin Whistle and the brother of Donald Ross; Bobby Jones; Jack Nicklaus; Arnold Palmer and Gary Player

 

 

In 2007 The Tin Whistles and The First Tee of the Sandhills entered into a partnership agreement whereby The Tin Whistles Board of Governors voted to support The First Tee Sandhills Chapter by providing volunteer support for its programs. In 2008 The Tin Whistles and The First Tee agreed to form The Junior Tour Series which is operated by Tin Whistle members.
